the Art of mathematical formulas — The Triangulation of Masterpiece
Reconstructing Masterpieces with Triangulation Formulas
This work aims to express the fusion of art and science by recreating classical paintings through mathematical methods.
Western paintings such as the Mona Lisa incorporate mathematical elements like the golden ratio. By recreating such traditional paintings with mathematical methods using modern computer programs, the work pursues new possibilities for art.
A mathematical formula is generated from the image of the original painting and drawn with a pen plotter to produce the finished work. Rather than the aesthetic standards of painting, it draws out a purely “geometric beauty” reconstructed from triangles alone.

About the Math Art Museum
I call the body of media art works I create using mathematical formulas the “Math Art Museum” (Sushiki no Bijutsukan). The project was born to realize a society where, as in the Renaissance, there is no boundary between art and science. Based on Galileo Galilei's idea that “the book of nature is written in the language of mathematics,” its goal is to express everything through mathematical formulas. Works are published on TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter.
Drawing Masterpieces Reconstructed from Triangles
Examples: Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring" and da Vinci's "Mona Lisa".
Concept
By recreating classical paintings through mathematical methods, the work expresses the fusion of art and science. Mathematical elements embedded in Western painting, such as the golden ratio, are recreated with modern computational methods in pursuit of new artistic possibilities.
Process
- Prepare the source image (Girl with a Pearl Earring)
- Convert the image to black and white, removing unnecessary information
- Generate formulas that map the tonal values of the image to the density of triangles, using Delaunay triangulation for an organic arrangement
- Draw with a pen plotter (AxiDraw V3)
