Drawing Doraemon with Mathematical Formulas
About the Math Art Museum
I call the body of media art works I create using mathematical formulas the "Math Art Museum." The project was born to realize a society where, as in the Renaissance exemplified by da Vinci, there is no boundary between art and science. Galileo Galilei said that "the book of nature is written in the language of mathematics." With the goal of expressing everything through mathematical formulas, I create works that offer a taste of the beautiful world that formulas describe.
Drawing Doraemon with High School Math
Concept
A work that expresses Doraemon — one of the most iconic characters in Japanese pop culture — through mathematical formulas. By liberating formulas from the language of a privileged few and making them public and accessible, the work seeks to bridge science and society. The series also includes "Crayon Shin-chan in Formulas" and "Sazae-san in Formulas."
Process
- Prepare the source image (referencing the Doraemon image from the official TV Asahi website)
- Create formulas: the outline is composed of elliptical equations, the curve of the mouth is a parabola, and the whiskers are linear equations — all within the scope of high school mathematics
- Mechanical drawing with a pen plotter (AxiDraw V3)
Social Media Response
The work recorded 2.7 million views on TikTok and 1.8 million views on Instagram (as of March 2023). The series as a whole has surpassed 10 million total views.
